Five Gentle Methods to Incorporate Color into Your Construction
Monochromatic style has quickly become the trendiest trend when it comes to new homes.
Too often though, taking this route can leave your home feeling dull and unwelcoming.
Because even the most subdued, elegant designs incorporate pops of colour to bring their home to life, even the most minimal, subdued ones make use of splashes of colour to bring life and brightness to their space.
Color can be intimidating when choosing to build or renovate a new home, so we turned to Porter Davis Interior Designer Patrizia Romeo for guidance on adding splashes of colour into their space.
1. Color Doesn’t Always Mean Paint
We often think about painting when adding colour, but there are other ways you can bring vibrancy into your home with colour.
Plants and organic decor can add a welcome splash of green to a monochrome palette, softening its edges.
Decor can also add flair by way of adding colourful couches, bold rugs, or an eye-catching piece of artwork.
Tiling can provide another more permanent option, according to Patrizia.
“Walking into a powder room adorned with stunning tiles, luxurious tapware and an aesthetically pleasing decorative mirror is always a delight,” according to Shearer. “It’s an intimate bit of luxury you can enjoy privately.”
Make an eye-catching entrance Your home’s entryway offers an opportunity to add color and warmth. Make a bold entrance with bold wall paints or bold wallpaper, which can add visual interest.
“Your guests’ first point of entry into your event will be through the foyer,” according to Patrizia.
“Try adding a vibrant paint colour to the front door as a conversation starter; hanging artwork in the entryway; installing large mirrors; placing bench seats or consoles near it to make your space welcoming; or simply adding something unusual like an outdoor fountain.”
3. Express Yourself Creatively
Kitchens are great spaces to experiment with bold tones. To begin expressing yourself creatively in the kitchen is an ideal place.
“Why not add some decorative color to the cabinets or just make the island bench stand out with vibrant hues?” suggests Patrizia.
“For kitchen cabinets that remain timeless, adding decorative feature tiles can help add some color and character.
As for tapware and cabinet handles, matching matte black or brushed brass sets can add a real boost, she notes.
4. Adopt earthy tones Earthy hues are currently trending, adding warmth and personality to any space without overstaging its intended function.
“Earthy and warm tones like amber, terracotta, rust and dusty rose are trending now,” according to Patrizia.
“These soothing tones have become popular during lockdown, when we were left isolated at home. Their warmth has provided comforting relief during an uncertain time.”
5. Go With Your Color
If there is one colour you have an affinity for that you would like to incorporate into your home design, don’t be deterred simply because it may not fit with what would otherwise be considered “typical.” Instead, embrace it fully!
“Patrizia urges her students to be courageous,” she states.
“What will make your home truly distinctive and personal is its use of color. You can always mix other hues in with your main choice to either soften or enhance its impact.”
However, she advises that if your desired hues are wild and vibrant, some restraint may be necessary.
Be mindful when using dark paint colors as they can darken a space; however, with proper application and setting they can make quite an impactful statement.”
Hallways are small spaces that should remain white and bright unless there’s ample natural lighting present. To add color and interest, art on the walls, hallway runners or plants in decorative floor pots could all help add flair.
